    1970 – Indian government envisioned a “People’s Car” for affordable mobility.

    1971 – Maruti Limited was incorporated under Sanjay Gandhi, but failed due to technical and financial problems.

    1977 – Maruti Limited shut down.

    Rebirth – Maruti Udyog Limited

    14 Dec 1983 – Launch of Maruti 800 (based on Suzuki Alto SS80), priced at ₹47,500, which transformed India’s car market.

    First EV from Maruti Suzuki: The e-Vitara, based on the eVX concept, is the company’s first mass-produced battery-electric vehicle (BEV).

    Global Collaboration: Developed in partnership with Toyota and Daihatsu, Maruti Suzuki will produce it in Gujarat for both domestic and export markets.

    Launch Timeline: Revealed at the Bharat Mobility Expo in Delhi (January 2025). Production begins: Spring 2025. Sales rollout expected: March–Summer 2025 in India, Europe, and Japan.

    Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

    Six EVs by 2030: The first fully-electric model—a production version of the eVX concept—will debut in India in 2025, followed by five more EVs by FY2030 Vitara: Maruti Suzuki’s first mass-produced EV, the e Vitara, is based on the HEARTECT-e platform and began production at the Gujarat facility in April 2025. It features 49 kWh and 61 kWh LFP batteries and will also be exported to markets such as Europe and Japan.

    Toyota Collaboration: Maruti will produce a 60 kWh, ~500 km range SUV EV at its Gujarat plant starting spring 2025, to be supplied to Toyota as part of their EV partnership.
