    Kia India Company Origin

    Founded on June 9, 1944, Kia India began life as Kyungsung Precision Industry, focused on manufacturing steel tubing and bicycle parts.

    In 1952, it was renamed Kia Industries, and subsequently expanded into motorcycles (1957), trucks (1962), and cars (1974).

    Its first integrated automotive assembly plant, the Sohari Plant, began operations in 1973.

    So, Kia is one of South Korea’s oldest and most diversified automakers, evolving from bicycles to a full-fledged automobile manufacturer by the mid-1970s.

    Kia India Entry into the Indian Market

    Kia India Pvt. Ltd. was officially incorporated on May 19, 2017, and is headquartered in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.

    The Anantapur manufacturing plant began trial production in January 2019, and the mass production of the Kia Seltos began on 31 July 2019.

    This facility has a production capacity of around 300,000 vehicles annually.

    Focus & Strategy

    Kia India has curated its portfolio exclusively around SUVs and MPVs, intentionally avoiding hatchbacks and sedans. The strategy reflects market preferences and Kia’s global push for compact and midsize utility vehicles, with India serving as an export hub for these models

    First Dealership And  Expansion in India

    In February 2019, Kia India opened its first showroom in Noida, partnering with Allied Motors. This marked the brand’s physical entry into the Indian retail market. The showroom, designed on Kia’s iconic ‘Red Cube’ concept, covers 12,000 sq ft and includes dedicated consultation areas, a lounge and café, new car delivery zones, and after-sales facilities.

    Kia India Dealership 

    By mid-2019, Kia had rolled out approximately 105 dealerships across 74 cities in India. The brand aimed to expand to ~265 touchpoints in cities by the time the Seltos launched in August 2019. As of late 2024, there are approximately 445 Kia locations spread across 299 cities and 30 states/territories—with Maharashtra (48), Uttar Pradesh (42), Gujarat (39), Karnataka (37), and Tamil Nadu (33) leading the numbers. Another source notes that platforms like CarDekho list around 517 Kia dealers across 340 cities.
