MG Motor began in 1924 in Oxford, UK, as a sporty arm of Morris Garages (“MG”) under Cecil Kimber. It became independent in 1930 under the name M.G. Car Company Limited. The brand is famous for bringing affordable sports cars to enthusiasts.

Ownership Journey

MG Motor underwent numerous ownership transitions: from British Leyland to Rover Group and MG Rover, before entering administration in 2005. It was then acquired by Nanjing Automobile, which merged into SAIC Motor in 2007. Since then, MG has operated as a brand under the Chinese state-owned SAIC Motor.

SAIC Motor & Global Presence

Parent Company Profile: SAIC Motor is among the top global automakers and was the first Chinese group to surpass 7 million annual sales. Its portfolio includes brands like MG, Roewe, and Maxus, alongside partnerships like SAIC-GM and SAIC-Volkswagen.

Global Expansion MG Motor vehicles are now designed and produced primarily in China, with regional manufacturing in countries like Thailand, India, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Assembly in the UK (Longbridge plant) continued until 2016.

Export Reach In 2023, MG Motor sold approximately 840,000 vehicles globally, with 88% sold outside of China, making it China’s leading single-brand exporter.

Next-Gen & EV Launches

MG Motor unveiled the MG4 EV (expected August 2025), featuring a semi-solid-state battery. Other models include the redesigned HS, MG3, and ZS with Hybrid+ and PHEV versions.

Cyberster Electric Roadster

MG Motor’s all-electric sports roadster, the Cyberster, has now launched in India (₹72.49 lakh), with a 77 kWh battery, dual motors (510 PS, 725 Nm), 0–100 km/h in 3.2 s, and a 580 km range. It includes ADAS, driver monitoring, Formula-1–inspired stability features, and premium amenities.

Luxury Electric MPV – M9 Launching in India at ₹69.9 lakh, the M9 is positioned as the country’s first all-electric luxury MPV, sold through MG’s Select channel.

Global Electric Lineup MG Motor introduced the IM5 and IM6 electric models under the new IM EV series in 2025.

Auto Show Spotlight At the Geneva Motor Show, MG showcased its Cyberster EV, emphasizing its focus on design and performance in the EV segment.

MG Windsor EV Electric crossover with premium flair, starting around ₹14–18 lakh. Equipped with ~38–52.9 kWh battery offering ~332–449 km range, panoramic glass roof, large touchscreen, and ADAS features. Highly popular—with over 27,000 units sold in India.

MG M9 India’s luxury electric MPV launching at around ₹69.9 lakh. With a 90 kWh battery, ~430–548 km range, spacious 7–8 seat options, ADAS L2, and premium cabin features, it stands as MG’s flagship EV for families

High-Performance Electric Roadster

As of August 2025, MG has established approximately 285 dealerships spanning 211 cities across India.
