    Volkswagen origin

    About the Volkswagen origin,

Founded on May 28, 1937, Volkswagen India began as the Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH (“Company for the Preparation of the German People’s Car”) under the German Labour Front—an institution tied to the Nazi regime. It soon became Volkswagenwerk GmbH, with its headquarters and main factory located in Wolfsburg, Germany, built to produce an affordable vehicle for German citizens.

The original idea stemmed from Adolf Hitler’s vision of a “people’s car” and was designed by automotive pioneer Ferdinand Porsche. The prototype later became the legendary VW Beetle.

World War II redirected production from civilian vehicles to military outputs. After the war, British authorities took over the factory, revived civilian production (notably the Beetle), and helped lay the foundation for VW’s resurgence.

    Volkswagen India  Expansion & Transformation

In 1960, the Volkswagen Group was partly privatized when the German government sold 60% of its shares, marking its transition to a joint-stock company.

Volkswagen expanded its model lineup with the Type 2 (Transporter), Passat, Golf, Polo, and more—establishing a diverse portfolio of cars known for engineering quality.ands—including Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, SEAT, and Škoda—becoming one of the world’s largest automotive conglomerates

By 2023, Volkswagen India had a global presence in over 140 markets, with nearly 5 million vehicles delivered annually and a workforce exceeding 680,000.

Volkswagen India: Recent Times And  Strategic Shift

In 2015, the company was thrust into a major scandal—“Dieselgate”, where it was discovered that VW had installed software to cheat emissions tests. This severely affected its reputation and finances.

In response, VW aggressively pivoted toward electric mobility, aiming to deliver 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2025.

Oliver Blume serves as CEO of the Volkswagen Group, overseeing the broader corporate strategy, including Porsche, which he also heads.
